There is plenty to celebrate this week as the first 10 households moved into April’s Grove. The plan is to have all 45 units filled by the end of November. Thank you to OPAL and all those who supported this effort. It could not have come at a better time. It feels great to have something to cheer about right now.

Orcas Community Resource Center is helping a few of the new residents furnish their homes. If you have surplus furnishings please send a photo of the items to info@orcascrc.org and they will follow up.

The San Juan Island Conservation District is preparing to launch the Orcas CCC program. They will train 10 people in forest management, working with both Western Washington University and the Northwest Indian College. Participants in the age range of 18-24 are eligible for AmeriCorps which will provide insurance and an education stipend as well. There are still a couple of places available; please help spread the word. To inquire or request an application contact the SJI Conservation District at 360-378-6621.

Thank you to the many who have contributed to the Orcas Island School District Initiative. We have raised $50,000 so far–a third of the way to our $150,000 goal–great support for our students and families! These funds will support digital access for all students as well as a weekly outdoor education day at Camp Orkila. Providing a day outdoors and with peers will be a game-changer for students, teachers, and parents. This is a true community collaboration with OIEF, OICF, OISD, YMCA, and the community of donors. To make a donation, visit https://oicf.fcsuite.com/erp/donate/create?funit_id=1668 and indicate “OISD/ALL In WA.”

While we are working in the OICF office again, we are not yet open to the public. If you would like to meet please email or call to make an appointment so we stay safe and honor the current guidelines.

Have a lovely Labor Day,
Hilary
