Joining a nonprofit board can be a great way to meet new people, use your professional skills, and contribute to causes that you are passionate about. With over 100 nonprofits serving the Orcas community, there is no shortage of opportunities to plug in.

But….

You really want to be sure it is a good fit before taking the leap. Think of it as dating before you marry. Understanding expectations, roles and responsibilities is key to long term success. OICF will be hosting an Introduction to Board Service workshop on Wednesday June 5 from 9:30-11:30 AM at the Parish Hall. We will outline basic responsibilities and dive into assessing organizational culture to ensure a good match. We will also have a panel of seasoned Board members to answer questions and share their highs and a few lows from their years of service. We welcome all to attend. RSVP at info@oicf.us.

If you are looking for other opportunities to get involved, check out the Community Connections section in this week’s Sounder. It offers a full listing of volunteer opportunities and events from the nonprofit sector.

In case you missed the (very wet) Pet Parade last weekend, here are photos of a couple of this year’s candidates: Ava and Nona. This is going to be one tough race! You can vote here, or drop a ballot in any of the boxes in businesses in Eastsound. Proceeds go to support Orcas Island Children’s House.

I hope you have a great weekend, Hilary
