Island Market is hosting a fundraiser for the Food Bank this month. You can add a donation amount to your bill when checking out. Their goal is $5000, and it looks like they may surpass it, as they have already raised over $3000 and the month is just half over. Orcas steps up, once again. Fantastic!

We know that hunger exists even on Orcas. Thanks to the Orcas Island Food Bank and the donors who support their efforts for helping to bridge the gap. The Food Bank is open mid-day Tuesday and in the evening Thursday for food distribution. Currently, they are working with 80-90 families per week.

They also sponsor the Weekend Packs program at the school. Approximately 48% of the elementary students and their families at the Orcas Island School District qualify for the Free and Reduced meal program. (Children from families with incomes at or below 130 percent of the poverty level are eligible for free meals. Those with incomes between 130 percent and 185 percent of the poverty level are eligible for reduced-price meals). Some of these children do not have sufficient food at home, and weekends can be challenging. The Weekend Packs provide nutritional food that requires no cooking, so kids don’t go without food when school is not in session. Ever grateful for the support.

I hope to see you Nov. 17th at the celebration of Marsha and Bob Waunch, honoring their years of dedicated service building and sustaining the Animal Shelter.  It will be from 3-5 pm at the Orcas Center.

Have a great weekend,
Hilary
