The League of Women Voters is hosting a Candidates Forum this Monday, October 14, from 5-7:15 at the Eastsound Fire Hall. Candidates for the Port of Orcas, Orcas School District, and State Senate will be there to field your questions.
One of the seats that is open on the School Board is being vacated by Janet Brownell. Janet has served as a volunteer Board member for 20 years. During her time on the board, the school has become one of the top in the state as far as educational outcomes and the campus has been transformed to reflect that excellence. She has supported the staff, the administration, and the students to ensure our schools are safe, engaging, and exciting spaces to learn and grow. She was inspired to get involved in honor of her Mom, who was a teacher. She certainly has carried her educational legacy forward.
Janet’s last Board meeting is this month and she has requested no celebration. She will remain active with the Orcas Island Education Foundation. If you would like to honor her efforts, I am sure she’d love to see you at OIEF’s Food for Thought dinner on Nov. 3rd at the Orcas Center (purchase tickets here), or appreciate a donation made directly to OIEF here.
Our community relies on the volunteer participation of leaders like Janet. I look forward to seeing where she invests her expertise next.
Hope to see you at the movies this weekend.
