Dear Volunteers,

As we reflect on the heart and soul of our island during this Volunteer Appreciation Month, we are filled with immense gratitude for the spirit of volunteerism that defines this place we call home.

Orcas Island is extraordinary not just for its natural beauty, but for the generosity, creativity, and dedication of the people who live here. More than 100 nonprofit organizations thrive thanks to the time, talents, and hearts of volunteers—neighbors helping neighbors, friends coming together for a common cause, and individuals stepping up to make a difference.

Whether you’re organizing events, serving on a board, educating and mentoring youth, supporting families, caring for animals, protecting the environment, or giving in ways seen and unseen—thank you. Your contributions build the fabric of this community and help ensure that Orcas remains a vibrant, compassionate, and resilient place for all.

From all of us who witness your work and benefit from your service: thank you for making this island so special!

Volunteer-driven events and programs abound:

  • The Earth Day Orcas main events happen this weekend, with a ‘Voice of the Earth’ gathering tonight at Odd Fellows. Saturday’s events include The Great Islands Clean-up at 10am, and the ‘Procession of the Species Parade’ at 11:30am.

  • The Bill Yarlott Youth Fishing Derby with a pancake breakfast at Cascade Lake Saturday morning. Free fishing poles and tackle provided by the Jeffrey G Pyne free fishing weekend!

  • Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland opens this weekend at the Orcas Center. Be sure to cheer on all the backstage volunteers along with the dancers during your standing ovation!

  • Every Tuesday, volunteers run the Community Lunch, 12 – 1:30pm in the Community Church basement. All are welcome to join lunch, and volunteers are always needed. Sign up here!

  • Are you interested in volunteering? Reach out to an organization that interests you to find out how you can get involved!

  • Spring GiveOrcas is almost here, May 6 – 15, featuring 36 programs and projects that couldn’t happen without volunteers. More info coming soon!

With heartfelt appreciation,

Lindsay
