Bob Waunch looking over the flight simulator in use
I had the pleasure of attending the ribbon cutting for the Airhawks flight simulator this past weekend. What an amazing machine and what a lovely experience. The simulator will be used to supplement instruction and provides variable conditions and locations throughout the United States to expand the students’ experience. The simulator replicates a complete aircraft cockpit and is qualified by the FAA to allow pilots to maintain their instrument rating in place of actually flying the aircraft — a significant cost saving. Funding for the simulator was provided through OICF and the GiveOrcas Campaign.
The Airhawks Flying Club provides Flight Training Scholarships to high school-aged students who want to learn to fly and/or might be considering a career in aviation. There are currently two students completing training and additional scholarships will be available this year. So far, 18 students have completed the program and earned their private pilots license, including one of the current Certified Flight Instructors (CFI), who was an Airhawks student in his youth and has now returned to Orcas.
You can read more about the event here. If you are interested in learning more about the program, please check out their site or contact Bob Waunch.
The Dental Van clinic returns in April and we are still in need of housing for one of the hygienists for April 14-16. If you have a guest house or lodging to offer, please let me know.
Have a great weekend.
