Hang onto your hat, as Orcas dives deep and the festivities ramp up.
The Solstice Parade is June 23, high noon, starting in front of the Odd Fellows Hall. This is the 20th year for this happy island tradition and a great example of what can happen when a few volunteers invest their talents and energy to making their vision reality. I recall participating in the very first parade, accompanied by Dr. Diane Boteler and Janet Brownell, when we dressed in seaweed and wore fish tea cozies as headgear. Don’t you wish I had a picture of that? Thank you to all who make the parade happen. It certainly sets a great tone for the kick off of the summer season.
June 23-24 is also the Annual Garden Tour, hosted by the Orcas Garden Club. This is a wonderful opportunity to see working farms, home and school gardens, and gather ideas for your own patch of ground. Tickets are available at Darvills, Driftwood Flowers or Orcas Pottery (one of the showcased gardens).
OICF has set up funds for both island Fireworks displays, Deer Harbor (on the 3rd) or Eastsound (on the 4th). Donations can be made to either through this link.
Hope whatever is on your dance card this weekend, you have fun and enjoy!
