Grounded on Crescent Beach

I drove by this boat yesterday morning. I am happy to report that it was floating and on its way in the afternoon. Seeing it listing and stuck reminded me of the current state of the Ferry System. This week has been truly remarkable with far more runs canceled than sailing, and the few that did run were hours delayed with waits of 5-8 hours being common. In my 30 years on the island, I have never experienced anything even close to this.

It is beyond time for leadership at the County, State and Federal levels to take action and secure real money to repair and replace boats and increase staffing. WSF must rethink their training and staffing programs if they have any hope of building back their pool of employees. I have written to our representatives and joined the Ferry Riders Opinion Group, and I encourage you to do the same. The system has failed.

On a more positive note, the Dental Van had a successful visit this week and managed to make it to Lopez for their clinic today. So appreciate everyone who makes these clinics possible and to the Community Church for hosting.  Special thanks to Bob and Marsha Waunch for going above and beyond. Bob flew dentists to and from, and Marsha guided the staff to their accommodations. They even provided a room for the hygienist who ended up arriving in the middle of the night due to the above mentioned ferry issues. Marsha also worked everyday, welcoming patients, coordinating volunteers, and rearranging appointments. She’s a rockstar! Thanks to an anonymous donation, we are now able to provide dentures for patients. It is a total game changer for so many. I am so grateful for everyone who contributes to making this program such a success.

Tomorrow is the Great Islands Clean Up. I will be hosting the Eastside station at Olga Park starting at 10. There will also be supplies at the Village Green. Swing by to pick up safety vests, garbage bags, and pickers if you want to participate. It is always a fun way to spend a few hours, plus FREE BEER! Hope to see you out there.

Have a great weekend—
