Standing In The Sun

This week was a heavy one. Regardless of our politics, it remains difficult to understand how our nation has become so divided and challenging to look towards the future with hope. But the tides continue to ebb and flow, the sun rises and sets. We will march on.

I found a small amount of peace warming my face in the sun at the water’s edge, reflecting in the knowledge that my fellow islanders continue to come together to confront issues, find creative solutions and compromises, smile and take care of neighbors, and contribute generously. I was reminded of this sense of togetherness a few times during various meetings this week.

In one meeting, I learned more about the next phase of the Pea Patch Community Campus. I’m excited about the opportunities to become more engaged in supporting the project, which will undoubtedly be transformational for our community; bringing together critical social services into one campus and expand the capacity of Orcas Community Resource Center, the Orcas Food Bank, and OPAL to serve more community members.

In another conversation, I learned how a few other regional community foundations are working to build relationships and reach out to newer community members, while also continuing to engage with long time supporters. In another meeting, I discussed ways to strengthen the relationship between a donor and the organization they care deeply about.

These were all generative, interesting conversations that will lead to positive change and progress. Together we can make a difference. We can build a strong, equitable community right here on Orcas – by volunteering, supporting causes we care about, and helping out neighbors.

If you’re ready to make an investment in our community, three great options include becoming a Community Cornerstonein support of OICF, setting up a Donor Advised Fund to direct gifts to the causes you care most about, or planning a legacy gift to support a bright future for our community. Please reach out to me to learn more, anytime.

If you’re looking for a creative outlet, join an upcoming Luminary Workshop – there are several options in the coming weeks to prepare for the Winter Solstice Luminary Parade, December 21 at 5pm. Workshop details and registration is open now!

If you’re just looking to let loose and support many of our island businesses, the annual Hops on the Rock festivities are happening this weekend. Tickets are still available!

With gratitude,

Lindsay
