I am enjoying my weekend in South Carolina with my high school mates. We have rented a large house on the Isle of Palms. The pool and the ocean are still warm enough to swim in—mighty fun. There is nothing like time with really old (in every way) friends!

One of the best ways to belong to a community is to volunteer. My time as an EMT made me feel like a vital part of the island and introduced me to folks I may have never met otherwise. Since leaving OIFR, I am enjoying signing up for other opportunities like the recent Film Festival and the County Health Vaccine Clinics.

Recently, Ed Andrews, OICF’s Communications and Grants Manager, launched a series focused on volunteers, called One Person Can Make A Difference. It has been really interesting reading about where and how folks pitch in. Check out the series here.

With the number of nonprofits on Orcas, there are always open opportunities. Currently, Meals on Wheels is seeking delivery drivers. The Senior Center has other needs. The Food Bank has a few shifts open. The Animal Protection Society is pulling together an Events Team to bolster their fundraising activities, and the Historical Society has many opportunities available. If you are interested in finding a volunteer gig, you can look through our Non Profit Directory to learn more about the organizations and find their contact information. I also welcome you to give us a call or swing by the office and we can help walk you through the process.

Have a great weekend—
H
