Asleep at the Wheel on the Village Green

Asleep at the Wheel entertained quite the crowd last night for a free concert on the Village Green.  What a fun evening!  Thank you to the Orcas Center and all of the sponsors who are supporting these events.  It is the perfect way to celebrate summer!

I sat next to a young family visiting the island who wanted to know if this was a regular island thing.  I explained that the frequency of these events was more of a response to Covid and the desire to enjoy open air events for the time being.  I suspect, however, that it will be very hard to return to indoor events in the coming summers.  Listening to great music while sharing a picnic, watching the sunset, and hanging out with friends and (for many) your dog is sure hard to beat.  I suspect this may be one of the many ‘new’ traditions inspired by Covid.

The Orcas Island Health Care District has released the results of their recent healthcare survey, which can be read here.  The results highlight continuing concerns with access to both primary and urgent care.  In talking to a few of the commissioners, I understand that part of the difficulty for expanding services is finding housing for candidates.  This is going to be an ongoing issue for so many of our businesses and key organizations.  As a community, we truly need to find some working solutions or we risk limiting services further.

Olga Daze returns tomorrow from 10-2 in beautiful downtown Olga.  There will be homemade baked goods, a gigantic treasure sale, and the parade at noon. And there is Music in Moran Saturday afternoon.  The Eastside is rocking it!  Worth the drive, for sure!

Hope you have a great weekend,
Hilary
