I just saw this article on the staffing shortage that local restaurants are experiencing. The challenges extend to our nonprofit sector as well. Currently, the Orcas Community Resource Center has three open positions; the preschools are still seeking teachers; and the Funhouse is looking for after school program support—all critical jobs needed to keep these programs fully functional. Not to mention the openings at Island Market. As a community, we really need to get creative and develop long term housing solutions so that we do not experience another season like this summer. It is far too stressful for those who serve on the frontlines.
The Orcas Historical Museum is having a busy weekend. They are having a grand reopening of the Crow Valley School, which has a brand new roof, thanks to a GiveOrcas grant. They also have a fabulous new exhibit at the museum on North Beach featuring historical maps. And they will be having their raffle drawing tomorrow when someone will win an electric vehicle—a fun way to support local history!
Island Oil Spill will be training volunteers on spill mitigation this October. Follow the link for dates. Given the number of boats that pass the island, it would be great to have a team prepared to deal with accidents. Similarly, Orcas Fire and Rescue is working on both a Fire and an EMS Academy this Fall. Please help spread the word to anyone who might be interested.
